FAME Leaders’ Academy holds GAD training for gov’t agencies

FAME Leaders’ Academy (FLA) recently launched its pilot gender and social inclusion training-workshop for Gender Focal Person System (GFPS) members, program implementers, government staff, and GAD advocates at the Green Sun Hotel, Pasong Tamo Extension, Magallanes, Makati City last August 28-30.

With the theme “Understanding and Integrating Sexuality & SOGIE to Gender Programs of Government Institutions,” the training-workshop focused on all gender stereotyping, gender concepts, SOGIErelated issues and concerns, and how this can be addressed in workplace settings.

The workshop also aimed at reviewing basic concepts of sex, gender, and sexuality; Understanding and analyzing SOGIE, and its socialization processes as well as, how it affects one’s sexuality and SOGIE. FLA’s Gender and Inclusion workshop also aimed to enumerate policies that are discriminative against LGBT and to all genders.

FLA core faculty and gender specialist, Alvin Cloyd Dakis, was able to touch topics on social construction of gender, manifestations of gender bias and gender sensitive handling of LGBTQQIAAP clients.

Aside from gender topics, FLA’s international and motivational coach Richard David Tamayo discussed mental & emotional health, which mainly focuses on depression and anxiety, as government employees sometimes get stressed out juggling a work-life balance. Also present in the workshop was Dr. Blecenda Varona, lifestyle medicine pioneer in the Philippines, who touched base on gender-responsive choice empowerment and understanding biology of gender.

The workshop was attended by over 60 delegates from various government agencies and LGU’s such as Bureau of Quarantine, Metro Manila Development Authority, Philippine Armed Forces, Philippine Navy, Local Government Unit of Pasig, Local Government Unit of Taguig City, Development Authority of the Philippines, Insurance Commission, Philippine Orthopedic Center, and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

“Through this training, gender sensitivity became much clearer to me,” Ms. Ma. Loida Alzona, one of the Director of MMDA shared in the breakout session. “This will help us in our planning process, especially now that we can effectively put ourselves into the shoes of the LGBT. It can help us come up appropriate programs, for MMDA employees but to our clients as well,” she added.
